City of Marietta: Alexander Street Widening, Drainage, & Pedestrian Improvements

This project is only 800 feet in length, but includes numerous constraints to make the project challenging. The existing road width goes down to 18 feet from face-of-curb to face-of-curb; the desired cross section will include two lanes, curb, gutter, and sidewalk on both sides of the road. A drainage basin of over 25 acres goes through the project limits, which contains multiple generations and multiple redundant routes of over-capacity pipes; the project includes consolidation to a single system where feasible, re-routing drainage from underneath private structures, and addition of inlets and catch basins where appropriate. The overhead utilities will be consolidated into a shared underground conduit vault. Due to the required cross section, storm water accommodation, and the relocation of all overhead utilities to underground, there are challenging cut and fill slopes on both sides of the road requiring multiple wall solutions. Compounding all of this lining almost the entire length of the project are heritage trees and buildings that are eligible to be on the historic register.
